“Lipstick On the Mirror” is Pop Evil's first major release, and definitely has the potential to be a runaway success. The album finds the eyes of the Michigan natives aimed squarely at the hearts (and wallets) of those who still look to the radio for music recommendations. The songwriting is fairly catchy, with some solid and memorable choruses. “Hero” in particular has the potential to be a big hit, with its familiar song structure and subject matter (quite a few bands seem to have written songs focusing on the word “hero”).
The guitar and vocal tones strongly resemble those of Nickelback throughout much of the album, with an occasional sprinkling of Disturbed thrown in for good measure. For those who can't get enough of that sector of the hard rock genre, the album will be a welcome addition. The band also made sure to leave no stone unturned by including several acoustic ballads, and even experimenting with some Linkin Park-esque sampling and rapping. Kudos go to whichever guitarist handles the leads as well, for injecting each song with some welcome soloing.
I'll be honest, my tastes lie in the extreme spectrum (i.e. death metal, hardcore punk), and “Lipstick On the Mirror” will not find its way into my playlist, but I know lots of people who will love it for its familiar charm and simplicity.
